Qatar Trip Spurs Gaza Progress Hopes
By Alistair Bunkall, Middle East correspondent
During the visit of Donald Trump to Qatar today, there can be meaningful negotiations on Gaza.
Some of the main actors are going to be in the same city. The Hamas leadership is located in Doha and Qataris have been one of the key mediators, the Israel has sent a small delegation and US president and his team will be on the ground.
As the diplomatic players are closing in, Israeli attacks in Gaza are ramping up – more than 60 people have been killed in the past 24 hours, says local health officials, some of them in two hospitals, which were bombed by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
IDF says it was targeting Mohammed Sinwar, who happens to be Hamas’s leader in Gaza, but his death cannot be confirmed yet.
Israel is, however, pursuing a move to allow Gazans to go out voluntarily, a tactic that was given legitimacy by Trump in the earlier part of the year when he said he wanted to “own Gaza”.
This gathers more and more opposition from the world, as well as Israel’s plan to continue this campaign.

Trump has got style for this type of stroking. Earlier today, a little earlier, Trump spoke with the Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa, whom he met in Saudi Arabia this morning, and called him a “young, attractive guy”.
