American Citizenship for UK
The American Citizenship for UK first batch of data, showing Donald Trump’s second year, revealed that more Americans applied for British citizenship during January to March than at any other time.
Applications for US citizenship came from 1,931 Americans, which was the highest number since records began in 2004 and much higher than the past quarter, according to figures from the UK Home Office revealed Thursday. There was already a sharp rise in applications during the October-December period because Trump was re-elected.
The number of permanent settlement applications by US citizens, not just visits, reached a new high in the UK last year. Because of the settlement, people can live, work, and study in the UK for as long as they choose and use it to gain citizenship. There was a fifth higher number of granted settled status permits for Americans in 2024, compared to 2023.
Interest in becoming a Briton peaked in the US last in 2020, as Trump was president and the world was fighting Covid-19.
Data suggests that in the first six months of 2020, nearly three times the number of Americans gave up their nationality as did so in the previous year. The statistics were put together by Bambridge Accountants, a company with offices in New York and London that focuses on international taxes.
“They’re mostly people who have already left the US and decided it’s just become too much for them,” said Alistair Bambridge, a partner at Bambridge Accountants.
Many individuals who gave up their citizenship at that time explained that they were unhappy with how the United States was being led and how the pandemic was handled, but they often gave taxes as a reason, too, according to him.
While the UK and other European countries have been popular places for Americans to build a new life, that’s now becoming more difficult.
Last week, the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government will make it tougher for legal migrants entering the country and extend their wait time for citizenship.
Meanwhile, an Italian law that eliminates citizenship for those with great-grandparents in the country came into effect this week. There had already been tighter restrictions for people from countries outside the European Union.
