FIFA Women’s World Cup
FIFA Announced on May 9! The FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2031 will welcome up to 48 teams, and the U.S. is one of the desired host countries for the event.
- It has been established that the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ will accommodate 48 teams from 2031 onward.
- Approval of a revised FIFA Disciplinary Code combating racism has been achieved.
- The formalities of an Afghan women’s refugee team and the introduction of the FIFA Strategy for Action for Afghan Women’s Football have been completed.
FIFA explains how expansion of the tournament will lead to “a substantial boost to representation, allowing more countries and players to participate in major competitions and stimulate a greater investment in women’s football worldwide”.
The 2027 Women’s World Cup will take place from June 24 to July 25 in Brazil, and the competition is set to have 32 teams.
There is no host yet for the 2031 women’s World Cup, but the United States is the only country bidding to host it. The United States, Canada, and Mexico will co-host the men’s World Cup in 2026.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino declared in a press release that the decision of the Confederations Cup is not a move made with just the intention in mind of growing the game, but rather a step to promote women’s football by allowing more member associations to develop their structures holistically through the tournament.

“As the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the first with every confederation team having at least one win and half of confederations defeating every entity in the group stage, and numerous other records, the event…created a global standard in terms of competitiveness”. In doing so, the FIFA is determined to sustain the good trend in the global growth of women’s football”.
FIFA has announced that, without the 48-team women’s World Cup, there will be 12 groups, which will increase the total number of games to 104. This change will call for an additional week for the tournament schedule.
The plan was declared in a recent virtual meeting of FIFA with the inputs of soccer confederations and stakeholders, and is complemented by the huge progress of women’s football around the world, according to the official statement.
The streaming platform had previously been revealed by FIFA and Netflix to show the 2027 and 2031 women’s World Cups in the United States.
Spain came out triumphant in the 2023 World Cup, when played in Australia and New Zealand. The United States has managed to win two consecutive World Cups before (2015-2019) and has won the event four times in total (1991, 1999).
