Understanding Blood Pressure Readings
Blood pressure is measured as two numbers — systolic (pressure when the heart beats) over diastolic (pressure between beats) — expressed in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). Regular monitoring is one of the most effective ways to detect hypertension early and reduce risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.
AHA/ACC 2017 Blood Pressure Classification
- Normal: Systolic <120 AND Diastolic <80 mmHg
- Elevated: Systolic 120–129 AND Diastolic <80 mmHg
- Hypertension Stage 1: Systolic 130–139 OR Diastolic 80–89 mmHg
- Hypertension Stage 2: Systolic ≥140 OR Diastolic ≥90 mmHg
- Hypertensive Crisis: Systolic >180 and/or Diastolic >120 mmHg — seek emergency care immediately
Tips for Accurate Blood Pressure Readings
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring
- Avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking for 30 minutes before
- Sit with back supported and feet flat on the floor
- Keep arm at heart level and do not talk during measurement
- Take two or three readings, one minute apart, and average them
High blood pressure often has no symptoms — which is why tracking it regularly is critical. If your readings consistently show Stage 1 hypertension or above, consult your doctor. Pair blood pressure monitoring with our BMI calculator and waist-to-hip ratio tool for a complete cardiovascular risk picture. For heart rate monitoring during exercise, see our heart rate zone calculator.
